Economic Issues

The Economic Issues team was created in June 2018.  The team identifies issues that would benefit from local actions and provide information to assist people with economic challenges.  To date, the team has focused on learning about the current local, state, national and global economic issues that are not being addressed by other DCPAA teams.  We seek to share our knowledge with DCPAA members at the general membership meetings.

The Education Team is concerned about public school education throughout Dutchess County from a variety of vantage points: the students, the teachers, testing, trade school versus college, the safety of the school buildings, and school budgets. We hold forums periodically so people can share their voices and ideas which we hope will lead to actions in the community.

The Environment Team, working in conjunction with national environmental grassroots organization Mothers Out Front, acts to ensure we have a livable climate. We believe that we need to end our reliance on fossil fuels and move our communities to 100% renewable energy.

The Healthcare Action Team believes that healthcare is a human right, and continuously advocates for comprehensive, affordable, equally available for all, Single Payer health insurance, with lifetime coverage. Our grass roots actions work to support passage of the NY Health Act- legislation introduced in the New York State Assembly and New York State Senate, funded by a progressive graduated payroll tax, that would guarantee every New York State resident receives health coverage with freedom to choose, equality of care, based on ability to pay; with no monthly premiums, deductibles, or co-pays. We affiliate with and support “The Campaign For New York Health”-

Immigration Justice

The Immigration Justice team works to raise awareness about both local and national issues such as: municipal ID’s, the Greenlight NY campaign (drivers licenses for all, regardless of immigration status), family separation, and ICE raids. We take a vocal stand about the inhumane treatment of those seeking refuge at our borders and those in detention facilities.

Saving Democracy

The Democracy Team of DCPAA has been focusing on election law reforms in New York State in cooperation with the state-wide coalition Let NY Vote . We also work for campaign finance reforms in NY with the Fair Elections coalition . On a local level, we have been circulating a petition addressed to the Dutchess County Legislature to end pay-to-play in county government by passing a local  law to institute public financing of county-level elections. The team is also involved in voter registration through tabling events, canvassing and working with other organizations. We also support an end to gerrymandering at federal, state, and county levels, and we cooperate with efforts to use ranked choice voting in all elections when there are 3 or more candidates.
