How does an individual become a committee person on the Dutchess County Democratic Committee?

There are two ways to become a committee person:

(1) File a designating petition

For a designating petition, signatures of at least 5% of the enrolled Democrats in the election district must be obtained during the period from early June to early July of Odd numbered years. (Specific calendars are set by the NYS Board of Election and must be followed.) More than the minimum of signatures should always be collected to allow for contested signature. If there are three or more valid designating petitions for an election district, there is an election at the September Primary to select the two members. Otherwise, those submitting petitions are automatically elected.

REQUIREMENTS and PROCEDURES:

Enrolled voter with Democrat affiliation.

Select an election district committee membership (in some cases a ward – election district) in a municipality in the NYS Assembly District in which the voter is registered.  There are two representatives on the Dutchess County Democratic Committee for each election district.  Create a designating petition for a committee member seat using the information available from the Dutchess County Board of Elections.  The voter may want to contact the chairperson of their local municipality Democratic Party Committee to find out where there may be vacancies.  Here is the link to the Dutchess County Democratic Committee town committee web page:

Obtain the signatures of at least 5% of the enrolled Democrats in the election district on the petition during the specified petitioning period.

Submit the designating petition to the Dutchess County Board of Elections before the final petition filing deadline.

If there are three or more valid designating petitions for an election district, there is an election at the September Primary to select the two members.

(2) By Vote of the County Committee to fill a vacancy

Alternatively, to fill a vacancy the County Committee can appoint any enrolled Democrat from within the county and Assembly District. In practice, the local town or city committee recommends names to fill vacancies and the County Committee votes for them at a full committee meeting.
