register by tomorrow to join us for the 2021 Virtual Lobby Day for Healthcare Professionals, Residents and Students (open to anyone, regardless of professional or school status, to join our rally and skills workshops) on:
Tuesday, March 23 from 10 AM-2:30 PM on Zoom
This year, the New York Health Act (A6058/S5474) has been reintroduced with majority support in both the House and the Senate. This is a historic moment for the legislation, and the healthcare justice movement in NY has gained incredible momentum leading into 2021. We have a big day of lobby visits and activities planned, including three workshops (RSVP here)!
Our 2021 Virtual Lobby Day Goals:
✅ Pressure existing co-sponsors to be more active in their support of the NYHA
✅ Engage skeptical legislators and address their concerns to make them supporters
✅ Put an end to the Medicaid Spending Cap that is unjustly impacting low-income NYers’ access to health care.
Schedule for Lobby Day
Opening Rally (10:00-10:30am): We will start the day off with remarks from leaders in our movement, including:
–Assemblymember Richard Gottfried: Representing District 75 of Manhattan since 1971. Assemblymember Gottfriend is the Chair of the Assembly Committee on Health and is the lead sponsor of the New York Health Act in the New York state Assembly.
–Jawanza James Williams: Director of Organizing at VOCAL-NY, Jawanza fights to build power among low-income NYers impacted by HIV/AIDS, drug use, incarceration, and houselessness.
–Judy Sheridan-Gonzalez, RN, MSN, FNP: An emergency room RN at Montefiore in the Bronx for over 30 years, Judy is President of the New York State Nurses Association, one of the strongest advocates of the New York Health Act.
-Nadina LaSpina: A long-time disability rights activist, Nadina is also an educator and author. She works with Disabled in Action, ADAPT, the Disability Caucus, and other groups fighting for social justice.
Details of the NY Health Act (10:30-11:00am) We will provide a quick recap of the legislation, as well as learn about the Medicaid Spending Cap, and why it is long past time for it to be removed. Learn about the legislation from:
-Miao Jenny Hua (MD/PhD): board member of PNHP NY-Metro and incoming resident in the Public Health and Preventive Medicine program at Cook County Hospital/Northwestern University. She completed her internal medicine internship at the Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan. She also has a PhD in anthropology from the University of Chicago. Her dissertation on the integrated Chinese and Western health care system in China took her to spend over a year in Wuhan, China from 2016-2017.
Phonebanking Action (11:00am-11:30am): We will all take collective action and call our senators as a way to kick off the day.
Legislative Visits and Workshops (11:30am-2:00pm): This will be the meat of our day! There will be a number of groups meeting with legislators to promote the New York Health Act – those who are participating in meetings will receive a separate email with your delegation information. For those not going to meetings (or in addition to those meetings), we will have three workshops:
- Lobbying Skills (11:30am-1:00pm). This workshop will provide the basic skill set to lobby a legislator, including an opportunity to practice those skills. The workshop will be presented by Carlyn Cowen, longtime social justice advocate and current Chief Political and Public Affairs Officer at the Chinese-American Planning Council.
- Storytelling (11:30am-1:00pm): Our healthcare stories are some of the most powerful tools in the fight to achieve single payer health care. Join YuLing Koh Hsu and Ursula Rozum from the Campaign for New York Health to learn how to use those stories most effectively in your advocacy to #PassNYHealth.
- Writing to get read (1:00-2:00pm). This workshop seeks to train (or remind) advocates how to draft concise, compelling Letters to the Editor and Op-eds that appeal to both publishers and readers. Led by Judy Esterquest, long-time New York Health Act advocate and part of the leadership team for our Letters to the Editor Campaign.
If you plan to participate in a workshop (and we hope you will), please indicate your interest in this form. Please make sure to keep a lookout for follow-up information after registering for a workshop.
Report Back (2:00-2:30pm): We will plan to join up and report back after our workshops and meetings. Groups that met with legislators will give a quick update on their takeaways, and we can debrief together before wrapping up for the day.
We need to voice our support to pass these important policy goals this year and make sure our legislators know just how important these issues are to all of us, our patients, and our communities.
In the days and weeks following Lobby Day, we are hoping to continue scheduling more legislative visits to encourage senators to support the New York Health Act, so keep an eye out for future communications from us. The voices of constituents and organizers are vital in the fight to achieve health justice in New York, so thank you for your efforts!
Let’s get this to the Governor’s desk and make healthcare equality a reality for New Yorkers!
